Spring Has (Almost) Sprung!

After a nice break for the holidays, we are back at work both in the winery and the vineyard!  Our field crew is working diligently to prune the vines- with more than 30 acres to prune, you can be sure to spot them if you stop by the winery in the next few weeks.

What is the purpose of pruning, you ask? Pruning allows us to control the number of buds on each plant. Controlling the number of buds allows us to ensure that we have the correct fruit to wood weight ratio or yield per acre. Why is having a specific yield per acre important> It helps to ensure that the vine is not overstressed and helps to produce better fruit, as too much fruit inhibits proper maturity.

Once pruning is complete, it’s not too long before bud break and the start of the growing season. Stop by towards the end of April and you can check it out for yourself! Have more questions? Feel free to ask the winemaker at jay@canyonwindcellars.com.
