Final Wine Club Shipment

Until We Meet Again

It's hard to believe that in just over six weeks, there will be no more Canyon Wind Cellars and Anemoi Wines. From a sketch on a napkin to our nearly 10,000 case winery, we have had a whirlwind 20 years. As we near the end, we admit that we are a bit nostalgic about the wines we've produced, friends we've made, and incredible opportunities that have allowed us to build a business that we are proud of and provided us with the knowledge to follow our dreams going forward.

We've mentioned it before, but want to pass along again how grateful we are for your support over the years and enthusiasm for our wines. We wish each and every one of you the very best and hope that we meet again in the future. We've been asked if we'll make wine again and our response is simply, "never say never". In the meantime, if you happen to be near us during our travels (you can always see where we are on our Tin Sheets to the Wind website), please send us an email or message, we'd love to meet up for a glass of wine!

In this final shipment, you will be receiving some or all of the following: perhaps our favorite special project that we've produced over the last few years, the barrel-fermented Syrah Rosé, 2015 Eos; the final vintage of the wine that started it all, our flagship, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon; and the 2015 Apeliotes, a blend of our three favorite grapes- Cab Sauv, Petit Verdot, and Syrah.

As always, please feel free to email us at wineclub@canyonwindcellars.com with any questions, concerns, or ideas. If you want to keep up with our new adventures and still get your Finley fix, you can follow Tin Sheets to the Wind on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram!

All the best,

Summer 2016 Wine Club Shipment

Life is a Highway

By now you've received the news that we are closing Canyon Wind Cellars at the end of this year. While we are very sad that we will no longer be a part of your lives and a part of the Colorado Wine Industry, we'd be lying if we didn't admit that we are excited for the road ahead.

Many of you have asked about our future plans, so we wanted to share with you the details currently in place. Once all of our wine inventory is sold, all three of us (Jay, Jennifer, & Finley) will be hitting the open road and traveling around the country with our Airstream trailer. During our travels, we will be visiting wineries in other lesser known wine regions and detailing our tastings and adventures on our blog- Tin Sheets to the Wind. And of course, we still have to make a living, so we are simultaneously launching our new company, Tin Sheets Consulting, a mobile wine consultation service.

In this shipment, wine club members will be receiving some or all of the following: our perennial summer favorite, the 2015 Chardonnay; the final vintage of the wine that led to the creation of Anemoi, the 2014 Boreas; and the 2014 Notus, our first 90-point Anemoi wine (and one near and dear to Jennifer's heart).

As always, please feel free to email us at wineclub@canyonwindcellars.com with any questions, concerns, or ideas. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for sales, updates, and Finley pictures!

Cheers!

Spring 2016 Wine Club Shipment

Getting Back to our Roots

We can hardly believe it, but we are turning 20 this year. And even crazier that that? Our first vineyard, the Riverside Vineyard, was planted 25 years ago. Looking back on our first quarter century, we have made some wines that we would humbly proclaim as great (ask us about our favorites!). A mild winter, warm summer, and perfect weather in 2015 worked together to help us produce some even more great wines to add to that list. Our biggest production year ever at just over 9,000 cases, we are excited to share some of the best of the 2015 vintage with you starting with this shipment. All three of the wines in this shipment were produced from grapes planted in the Riverside Vineyard- Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Now 20 to 25 years old, these vines have weathered the snowiest year since their planting (2015), near hurricane force wind gusts (every Spring/Fall), and bears (2002, 2014), and we are excited to imagine the great wines still to come over the next 25 years and beyond.

In this shipment, Cliffside and Riverside members will be receiving the second vintage of our hugely popular barrel fermented and aged 2015 Reserve Chardonnay; the very limited production and just bottled 2015 Cabernet Franc; and the 2014 Petit Verdot in all of its big, brooding glory. Aeolian and Riverside members will be receiving our first ever barrel fermented and oak aged rosé, the 2015 Eos, named for the goddess of the dawn and the 2014 Apeliotes- both recent recipients of 90 points from the Beverage Testing Institute!

As always, please feel free to email us at wineclub@canyonwindcellars.com with any questions, concerns, or ideas. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest for news, events, and pictures!

Winter 2015 Wine Club Shipment

Hey, We're Doing the Inventory Limbo

How low can we go...If you've been into the tasting room or on our (brand new) website lately, you've probably noticed that we are sold out of a large number of wines. While most would agree that this isn't a terrible problem to have because it means that we are selling wine faster than we can make it, there is still an issue in that we can't provide some of our most popular wines to our customers. As of the sending of this email, we are holding the lowest inventory in our company's history- enough for about 1-2 months of sales. This also means that as of this moment we don't have enough wine in our inventory to send a full wine club shipment- but have no fear, next Thursday we will be bottling two of the wines that Cliffside and Riverside members will be receiving in this shipment. It is not our desire to send out wines so quickly after they have been bottled, but we want to be sure to fulfill our promise to our dedicated wine club members by providing them with new and exciting wines; and in this case, all three CWC wines are unreleased, something we've only been able to do once before.

In this shipment, Taste the Terroir members will be receiving the just bottled 2015 47-Ten Rosé, a perennial favorite that has sold out in less than six months over the last three years; the just bottled 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon that will reward you with some leisure time in your wine rack; and one of our special project wines from last year, and the 2014 "179", a fun blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Cabernet Franc that we have anxiously been waiting to release with this shipment. Aeolian members will be receiving the unreleased 2014 Notus, just the second vintage of our spicy blend of Syrah and Petit Verdot, and the newly released 2014 Lips- sure to be an award winner like it's predecessors (did we mention that the 2013 Lips won the 2015 Colorado Governor's Cup!).

In case you need an extra reason to open a bottle from your shipment, you can join us in celebrating the fact that we are on track for the most successful year in Canyon Wind's 19-year history. Additionally, the 2015 Harvest was a record-breaker and we already have lots of exciting projects in the works and in mind to come from this year's crop that we can't wait to share with you soon!

Cheers!

Fall 2015 Wine Club Shipment

Varieties are the Spice of Life

Back in the days before California wines came onto the scene and made White Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon household names, wines were labeled with the region and more specifically the Chateau, in which they were produced. You've probably heard of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire- just to mention a few. As Americans looking to make our mark on the very well established and highly regarded wine industry back in the disco-lovin' 1970s, we opted to begin producing and labeling wines by specific grape varieties. By the time we started producing wine in 1996, Cabernet Sauvignon was a rockstar in the red wine world (thank you Silver Oak, Stag's Leap, Jordan, and others!) and the variety that would become the constituent of our flagship wine.

If it seems like a number of our wine club shipments over the past few years have been all about that Cab, you are correct. The first grape planted in our vineyard and the one that makes up 35% of all the grapes we grow, Cab Sauv has been and continues to be very prominent in the wines we produce, both as single varietal and blend projects. This shipment includes two vintages of our varietal Cabernet Sauvignon- the 2012 (in a half-size bottle- perfect for one!) and the 2013. A mini-vertical, these Cabs are a great way to discover the differences in structure and flavor from one season to the next. The third wine included in this shipment is the newly bottled and as yet to-be released, 2014 Cabernet Franc. A lighter and brighter wine than the Cab Sauvs, the Cab Franc still provides a picture of seasonal variation and can add more fun to a comparative tasting as it is one of the parent grapes (with Sauvignon Blanc) of Cab Sauv. Whether you decide to try them side-by-side or one at a time, we'd love to know what you think!

Summer 2015 Wine Club Shipment

The Incredible Shrinking Wine Inventory

Owning a vineyard and winery means that we get to wear many different hats in our jobs/daily lives- we could list many; but let's face it, it really is all about the wine. Preparing for a wine club shipment is a lengthy process that takes us the better part of two weeks before the wine even gets to you. Part of the excitement in preparing a wine club shipment is deciding which wines we will be shipping. Whether it's an unreleased vintage or a special project created with just our club members in mind, we love getting to choose what we share with you. In choosing the wines, we typically try to aim for a theme - some past ones include oak usage, award winners, and blends vs. varietals. This shipment however, we are without a theme; the reason that we chose these wines was ensure that you get to enjoy a bottle before they are sold out!

If you've been a CWC fan for the past few years, you may have noticed that our Chardonnay and Petit Verdot don't last long. In fact, our 2012 Petit Verdot only made it for four months last year- barely long enough for us to announce the release before it was gone; and the last few vintages of Chardonnay have been sold out in under a year. In the interest of being sure that our biggest fans "get it before it's gone", this shipment includes the 2014 Chardonnay and the to-be released this weekend 2013 Petit Verdot. The final wine selection is a special project of which just 83 cases were created- the 2014 Eight & Sand, a Late Harvest Cabernet Franc, that is a little sweet and a lot interesting- it's definitely unlike anything we've had before! We'd love to know what you think about it!

Spring 2015 Wine Club Shipment

How Merlot Can You Go...

The last ten years have been tough for Merlot. In 2004, a movie named Sideways was released that dramatically changed public perception of this enduring and respected Bordeaux grape. The post-movie release fall from popularity for Merlot has been attributed to a phenomenon known as the "Sideways Effect". In case you haven't seen movie, let us give you a very brief synopsis- Merlot is not cool. Frequent association with images of 1980's yuppies wearing pink polo shirts with popped collars, whipping around town in their BMWs or Porsches, brick cell phone in hand, hasn't helped its image either (for a better visual, check out this spectacular video on "A Brief History of Merlot"!). We, however, have an immense amount of respect for this venerated grape (perhaps you've heard of Petrus?) and are on a mission to make Merlot cool again.

In celebration of this great grape and one of the original planted in our vineyard in 1991, the Spring 2015 Wine Club selections are all about Merlot. The first wine in this shipment is the increasingly popular Rosé, which sells out more quickly each year! Made from 95% Merlot, the 2014 47-Ten Rosé is a fun and enjoyable glimpse of Merlot's capabilities beyond use as a single varietal. The second wine is the truest representation of our featured grape, the 2012 Merlot, perhaps the best Merlot we've produced in more than a decade. The final wine in this shipment is another of our specially created wine-club only projects, a co-fermented blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Franc, the 2013 Riverside Reserve. Upon receiving this bottle you may notice that we had to make a correction to the vintage (thank you to our awesome staff for correcting more than 650 bottles!)- we'd like to note that this is the first time we've ever made a mistake in printing labels in 18 years. We have chosen to think of this as a collector's item, rather than an error. Hopefully you'll agree!

Winter 2014 Wine Club Shipment

2014: A Grape Odyssey- How we learned to stop worrying and love the weather

Harvest 2014 is definitely one for the books! As we approach harvest each year, we are sure that we've encountered any situation that may present itself. Since we took over the business in 2010, we've had hot & dry seasons, cool & wet seasons, we've pressed wines in the 100 degree heat and the 40 degree cold, and harvest has lasted anywhere from six weeks to three months. We could go on, but you have probably picked up on the recurring theme here- the weather.

This year, we picked our whites in early September and then had our typical waiting period for the reds to ripen. However, due to a late spring period of cold and rain followed by a warm and dry summer, instead of picking the reds over a few weeks, we picked all of them in SIX days. Yes, we picked and crushed more than 40 tons of grapes in less than a week! Of course, once the grapes are crushed and put into tank, there is no time for rest: pump overs, punch downs, juice samples, pressing, and racking all must be done before any rest is to be had. Needless to say, it has been a very rewarding (and exhausting) month for us winemakers!

We had our first day off since August 30th this past weekend, just long enough to catch our breath and concentrate on choosing some exciting wines to send you this quarter. We are particularly excited about this shipment for two reasons. The first is that we are sending a special wine not usually offered in a wine club shipment- the unreleased 2013 Anemoi Apeliotes. The second is that you will be receiving the second-ever wine club-only wine, the 2013 Malbec, to date the first and only Malbec we have ever produced. To round out the shipment, you'll also be receiving the 2013 47-Ten Red. Check out the newsletter in your shipment for more information about each of these wines.

As always, please feel free to email us at wineclub@canyonwindcellars.comwith any questions, concerns, or ideas. Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for news, events, and Finley pictures!

Fall 2014 Wine Club Shipment

A New Oak(ed Chardonnay): These are the wines you're looking for...

It's hard to believe that summer is already starting to wind down- schools are back in session here in the Grand Valley, veraison is underway in the vineyard, and in preparation of harvest which will begin in a matter of weeks, we have spent most of the month of July racking, filtering, and bottling 11 new wines.

Of these wines, three will be available only to wine club members- the 2013 Reserve Chardonnay, 2013 Malbec and 2013 Riverside Reserve. The others range from the newest vintage of Cab Franc to our largest production of Anemoi wines to date (633 cases) to the much anticipated release of only the second vintage of our reserve wine, IV. Part of what we love about winemaking is creating new and different wines. In the latest round of bottling, we bottled four wines that have never been under the Canyon Wind label and we look forward to creating even more this year (Late Harvest Syrah? Cab Sauv- The Unknown Clone?). Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for updates throughout harvest!

We are very excited to be featuring three of these new wines in the Fall 2014 shipment. In this shipment, you'll be receiving the first-ever wine club-only release, the 2013 Reserve Chardonnay, the just released 2013 Cabernet Franc, and the potentially best ever Cab produced by CWC, the unreleased 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon. Check out the newsletter in your shipment for more information about each of these wines.

As always, please feel free to email us at wineclub@canyonwindcellars.comwith any questions, concerns, or ideas.

Spring 2014 Wine Club Shipment

The Wine (Club) Who Loved Me

It has officially been four years since we (Jay and Jennifer) took over ownership and complete winemaking responsibilities of Canyon Wind (wow, time flies!). In that time, we've have made a number of changes to the company and the wines- from an entirely new set of redesigned labels, to the incorporation of our very popular and furry winery mascot, to the creation of our own special project line, Anemoi. Another project that we took on during this time was to create some wines specifically for our wine club. Small lot projects, these wines gave us an opportunity to experiment with some different styles of wines and then share them with our most important and appreciated friends- you!

Over the next 12-18 months, we will be bottling these wine-club only and small lot wines (either available to wine club exclusively or before they are released to the public); and as wine club members, you can look forward to receiving these wines in upcoming shipments. The special projects currently aging include a Reserve Chardonnay (fermented and aged in new French and American oak barrels), our first-ever single clone Cabernet Sauvignon- Clone 4, a co-fermented blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and our first ever Malbec. As we have begun the planning for the 2014 harvest, we can tell you that there are more of these fun projects in the works!

The wines chosen for this shipment are the newest vintages of each and all have our new label (which is exciting because all of our wines now have the newest label!). You'll be receiving the 2013 47-Ten White, 2012 Merlot (unreleased), and the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon (unreleased). Check out the newsletter in your shipment for more detail about each of these wines and the exciting new wines you can look forward to in upcoming shipments. As always, please feel free to email us at wineclub@canyonwindcellars.com with any questions, concerns or ideas.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Taste The Terroir Wine Club, visit our sign-up page for information about each of the club options or email us at wineclub@canyonwindcellars.com.

Cheers!
