One of the recent additions to the vineyard, Tempranillo was planted in 2001 as part of our Cliffside Vineyard expansion program. An experimental planting prompted by the famous Dr. Richard Smart, the decision to add Tempranillo to our line-up was based on the successes of our Bordeaux varietals and the realization that the unique climate of the vineyard is very similar to the number of degree-days of Northern Spain. This wine was created in our traditionally inspired low-intervention winemaking style. Post-fermentation, the wine was placed into a 10-month oak barrel program consisting of new, one and two-year old American and French oak.

2009 was the coldest year since our first planting. The extended time needed to bring this grape to full ripeness led to a spectacular example of the elegance of Tempranillo; showcasing bright red fruit, delicate and light earthiness and great vanilla from our specially designed oak program.  Pairs particularly well with spicy Asian and Mexican cuisine.
