A recent addition to the Canyon Wind wine lineup, Syrah was planted in 2001 as part of our Cliffside Vineyard expansion project. With the first vintage in 2005 and continuing through the present, Syrah from our Cliffside Vineyard is reminiscent of a Rhone-produced wine. With a soil containing a much deeper sand component before the cobble bench is reached and deeper strata of clay, this vineyard makes an ideal home for the Syrah. This wine was created in our traditionally inspired low-intervention winemaking style. Post-fermentation, the wine was placed into an 11-month oak barrel program consisting of new, one and two-year old American and French oak.

2008 was the second of three particularly cold years, resulting in an extended growth period for the fruit. The additional time needed to bring the fruit to full ripeness produced aromas of blackberry, cola and a hint of cassis; complemented by dark fruit, earth and minerality on the palate, giving this Syrah a delightful “Old World” feel. This well-structured and nicely balanced wine should be enjoyed with delicate game. 115 cases produced.
