MerlotVarietal Blend: 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot Vintage: 2007 Appellation: Grand Valley AVA Terroir: 100% Riverside Vineyard Alcohol: 13.07% Wine Acidity: 6.4 g/L Wine pH: 3.72 Suggested Cellar Time: 5-10 years Merlot was one of the first varietals planted in our Riverside Vineyard in 1991. The majority of the vines are planted in a sandy soil (like most of the vineyard) with a cobble bar at a depth of ten feet. The remaining vines, approximately 20%, were planted in a section of the vineyard with an uplift in the cobbles to sub-surface levels. This location is much harder on the plants due to the extraordinarily fast drainage and results in two distinct Merlots from the same clone in the same age planting. This wine was created in our traditionally inspired low-intervention winemaking style. Post-fermentation, the wine was placed into a 14-month oak barrel program consisting of new, one and two-year old American and French oak. 2007 was the first of three unseasonably cold years in the Grand Valley, changing the temperature profile into that of a milder climate. The Merlot has a nose with beautiful bright cherry, vanilla and blackberry followed by elegant spice. On the palate, this wine is very bright and light while still offering youthful structure and elegance. 537 cases produced. |
